This is long and I'm lazy, so I skimmed it; here are a few things I picked out: ++We need journalism of the highest standards and ethics to help us to understand other societies, the science and technology that define global risks and opportunities, and the paths to global co-operation rather than wider war.++ ++Are sensationalising, even misleading newspapers and broadcasting an inevitable cost of press freedom?++ I personally think that journalists should be allowed to write and publish anything they want (so long as it does not violate other laws...such as harassment, slander, etc.) I also think that, when journalists publish something that is not right it should be questioned, and they should be held accountable. Too many people today take everything they read as absolute truth...too few people question it. The wonderful thing about freedom of the press is that we can publish pretty much anything we want...that's also the bad thing about freedom of the press. People can publish bullshit if they want. It's up to us to decide what to believe...and to call them on their bullshit as well. After all, if we were to *limit* speech/press freedom, who would decide what was to be limited? Who would decide what was "true" and what wasn't? Would a Christian leader decide that anything supporting evolution was untrue and therefore unworthy to be published? Would the govt. decide that publishing anything against the current establishment was an offense punishable by law? So yes, I believe that you should be able to think what you want, write what you want, and publish what you want. I will stand up for you if someone tries to tell you otherwise. However if you write and publish bullshit, I will call you on it. *goes back to lurking*
