It is unfortunate that hate groups have co-opted many previously benign or even religiously significant symbols, but they have. Not everyone who uses such symbols ( or has the misfortune to have a site-name with certain numbers after their name!) is a member of a hate group. Being paranoid doesn't help ;D. However, if certain combinations of names, symbols, numbers and the 'type' of post go together - give it a closer look. Here is a good site for checking: [HERE]Illgrace Keep safe.

Not knocking the ADL, they do good work. I just wish they would give more than a passing nod to legitimate uses of the Pagan symbols. A lot of the Runes, for example, are still used today...probably more so by Pagans than by hate groups!!

If one clicks on the Rune symbol shown, it will tell you about it and how it is used by many pagans ans is harmless. Illgrace

Hi, I am Banshee. I am a former moderator of a large pagan message board and have had to deal with a couple of new registrants using covert symbolism, naming schemes and vocabulary that I would love to share.... I live in Switzerland. Gemany has its own share of problems with neo-fascist "pagans" and there is a very vocal group called Rabenclan that lists loads of info. Their list of symbols illegal to use in GermanyList of suspicious symbolsUnfortunately, they are starting to abuse not only germanic heathen symbolism but also celtic, for example the triskele (see lower down on link#2); We had customers using usernames containing the "Armanen", a german "order", one using "100%" as in "pure", one naming himself after the main exponents of the US Nazi party.... expressing loads of interest in runes, etc. They write in a sort of code, avoiding "red flag" vocabulary, but still obvious to their peers. One more thing. What's with the wearing of LONSDALE sports clothing. this raises suspicious because it contains 4 of the 5 letters for the german nazi party (NSDAP)? So Neo-Nazis have been fond of wearing this brand (which has taken action eg. not supplyin certain shops in Germany anymore) - Are english-speakers aware of this?

If they ever decide to ban my religious symbols in the any country I live in (I say "any country I live in" because I'm thinking of moving to the UK at some point.) they are going to have a HUGE fight on their hands.
I think we ought to do some "reclaiming" work NOW to make SURE that our symbols stay well known for their 'legitimate' use as sacred religious symbols, and don't get "trashed" by hate groups.

Thanks Banshee. That's really useful. My knowledge of fascism is very centered on the UK, with a bit about the US. I'm not particuarly well-informed about the situation elsewhere. That's Brits for you. Notoriously insular.

Oh yeah. We had one guy just using Guido "von" List's photograph as an avatar. This guy was the inventor of Ariosophy and a predecessor of Nazi "Germanic" idealisation, Thule order, black sun, all the kind of keywords you might encounter.
The message board user also mentioned Edred Thorsson, aka Dr Stephen Flowers.
More to come as I remember it.....

This is something most people will already know I suspect, but just in case, look out for the following numbers in usernames.
18- AH, Adolf Hitler
88- HH, Heil Hitler
14- 14 Words, A far right slogan.
Obviously caution is advised. In particular, some 18 year olds will also choose to put 18 in their usernames!

Here's some more numbers. www.adl.org/hate_symbols/numbers.asp As always, look for combinations of names, numbers and what has been mentioned, choice of avatars. If you would like to see the types they use, either check out the above forum for symbols or go to one of their forums. Illgrace
